Alkenes are hydrocarbons that contain at least one carbon-carbon double bond. Each of the carbon atoms in alkene making a double bond is sp² hybridized. Hence alkenes contain both sigma and pi-bond. Ethene is the simplest hydrocarbon, with a chemical formula of C2H4.
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Identify an alkene molecule.
- Describe the structure and hybridization of the simplest alkene molecule, ethene.
