Hydrocarbons Naming Conventions


Organic compounds have a common name, similar to a nickname, and a more formal IUPAC name. IUPAC stands for International Union of Pure Chemistry, an organization responsible for standardizing chemical terminology, such as the naming conventions for organic compounds. According to IUPAC system, the IUPAC name of a hydrocarbon may consist of 3 parts: “ Prefix + Root word + Suffix”.
