Functional Groups Naming Conventions


Functional groups are a special group of atoms or bonds within molecules that are responsible for the characteristic reactions of those molecules. Some of the common functional groups present in organic compounds include -OH, -CHO, -CO, -COOH, C=C, C≡C, and halogen. If any functional group is present in an organic compound, it is denoted in the compound's name with either a prefix or a suffix.
