Fermentation is a chemical process in which molecules such as glucose are broken down anaerobically. It occurs both in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, in the absence of oxygen. Two types of fermentation include lactic acid fermentation and alcoholic fermentation.
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Define fermentation.
- Name two types of fermentation and their respective end products.
- Give examples of organisms carrying out each type of fermentation.
- Identify useful commercial products obtained from each type of fermentation.
